I Am Sheba Montserrat
Essentially, I am a communicator. And as a multi-faceted performing artist, I have many means through which I engage with an audience.
I am a dancer. And as a Caribbean dance practitioner, I am one of five people who were the first in Europe to gain a formal qualification in African and Caribbean dance.
I am also qualified in community dance, and I am very proud to say that I can teach dance to people from any walk of life, irrespective of professional or amateur status, age, gender or variations in physical and mental abilities.
My training in contemporary dance and ballet, broadens my personal movement vocabulary, allowing for a wide range of self-expression.
As choreographer I especially enjoy working with non-professionals, whether giving them movement or inspiring their movement creativity through creative dance tasks.
Communicating to an audience through performance poetry, is a skill I love. Animating my carefully constructed written words into spoken words is a delight. Poetry allows me to sharpen and construct my thoughts.
Performing stand-up comedy is a powerful privilege. It allows me to deliver observations, irritations and heavy or serious subjects wrapped in a package suitable for entertainment.
As a historian I have a deep passion for Caribbean and Black British history and culture. I use my performing arts talents to share my acquired knowledge. In this mode I become an enthusiastic edutainer.
In 2012, I produced my first one woman show called SHINE which debuted at The Bernie Grants Art Centre in Tottenham, London. After which, I have continued to produce live variety shows, exposing the wide mix of entertainers I know, to audiences unfamiliar with their work.
I speak through my work in the performing arts. I archive my thoughts and events through performing arts. As an activist, I protest through my work in the performing arts.
I am a communicator and the performing arts amplifies my voice.
